The Best Way To Clean Your Pillows

clean your pillows

Did you know that pillows can harvest germs? Make sure to clean them when you are sick.

As part of your weekly cleaning routine, you probably change your sheets and vacuum the carpets or rugs around your bed to keep your bedroom feeling clean and calm. However, most homeowners forget to clean their pillows as part of the process. If you haven’t cleaned your pillows in the past six months, it’s time to give them a good wash! Here are the best ways to clean your pillows depending on what they are made from.

Down and Fiberfill Pillows: Use the Washing Machine

Down and fiberfill pillows are very easy to clean, as you can just throw them in the washing machine. Wash two pillows at a time in a front or top-loading washing machine that doesn’t have an agitator. If your washing machine has an agitator, put the pillows into the washing machine vertically so that they won’t get wrapped around the middle.

Check the tags on your pillow to see if they have any specific washing instructions. If the tag is long gone, use warm water on a gentle cycle to be safe. An extra rinse with cold water is a great idea to ensure that all of the detergent is washed out and the pillow is thoroughly cleaned. On low heat, tumble dry the pillows until they are completely dry.

Foam Pillows: Vacuum Up Dust

Foam pillows cannot be thrown into the washing machine, but their removable covers can typically be washed according to the tag instructions. To remove dust and debris from the pillow itself, vacuum the pillow with an upholstery attachment. Any dirty or soiled areas can be spot-cleaned using a mild cleaner and a cloth. Some foam pillows can be hand washed, but only do so when recommended on the care tag.

When Is A Pillow Beyond A Simple Wash?

While most pillows perk back up after a quick spin in the washing machine, eventually pillows need to be replaced. How can you quickly tell whether or not your pillow needs to be replaced? Fold your pillow, regardless of material, in half. Unfold the pillow after a couple seconds. Does it immediately return to its previous shape? If it doesn’t, start shopping for a new pillow.
