How to Create the Perfect Sleep Environment

Sleep Environment

Using your bedroom just for rest may help cure you of your insomnia.

Over the years, your bedroom has become and everything room. As electronics have taken over our lives, our bedrooms have gone to a dark room strictly for sleeping to a room for everything but. Since the 1980s, people have reported more than high amounts of insomnia as the telephone, pagers, and television has taken over the bedroom. So before turning on your TV, let’s take a look at how you can create the perfect sleep environment.

Clearing Out the Clutter

If you think of your bedroom as somewhere to work, play games, and as your gym, you will never be able to sleep there. So before settling in for the night, try clearing it out. Put your treadmill, computer and work desk, and TV in another room so you are free of distractions. Having your bedroom as a place for activities other than sleep will have your brain associating the room with things other than sleep. Getting rid of distracting things will help you find peace when you walk into your bedroom.

Ditch Electronics

For the same reason you shouldn’t have the distraction of a TV in your bedroom, you should also not have electronics like your phone, tablet, and a computer. Most of these devices emit a blue light that could trick your body into thinking it is daylight outside. Avoid having an alarm clock near your bed as it could cause you anxiety over the loss of sleep you experience. If you have to have an alarm clock, make sure to face it toward the wall instead of toward you.

Keep the Room Quiet

Noise is a common cause of sleeplessness. Have you ever noticed the sounds around your home magnifying in the middle of the night? Suddenly the beeping of that smoke detector, the cars driving down your street, and the snoring of someone else in the home becomes magnified and they are all you can hear. But you don’t actually have to live with those noises. To help drown them out, try using a white noise machine or aa fan to not only keep your body cool but to help drown out the noise. While it isn’t the noises in your home that keep you awake, it is often the inconsistency of the noises. Playing a white noise machine, soft music, or having a fan on will help keep you from being disturbed when a there is a sudden noise.

Keep It Cool

Did you know that your body temperature actually drops when you fall asleep? But in a hot room, this cooling down process can actually be hindered by a hot room. Keeping your room at a cool 60 to 67 degrees will help you fall asleep faster than a warmer room.

Using a Good Mattress

We have talked about the health benefits of a new mattress before, but a comfortable mattress will really help you fall asleep faster. A new mattress will allow you to sleep without the worry of stiffness or numbness that could plague you in the morning with a bad mattress. Do you remember you mother making you make your bed every morning? That is because nothing is better than a freshly made bed. Slipping down into a cool bed with some fresh sheets will help you prepare for bed and to settle into a comfortable position much faster than spreading the sheet and comforter over you.

With these tips and some practice, you will have the best night’s sleep yet in your new sleep environment. For more information on building your perfect sleep environment or finding your dream mattress, call All American Mattress today!
