4 Easy Tips for a Clean Mattress

how to keep a clean mattress

Follow these tips for keeping a clean mattress and comfortable bed.

The key to a good, restful night’s sleep is your mattress. Without the right mattress, you could find that you have trouble falling asleep, toss and turn, and wake not feeling rested. Once you have found the right mattress, however, you can’t just set it and forget it. Mattresses require care and maintenance. If you take care of your mattress as you should, it will last you through years of service. Thankfully, it is relatively easy to make sure you have a clean mattress. Just follow these steps!

Vacuum Often

Use a vacuum to routinely clean your mattress. The upholstery attachment is the perfect tool for cleaning your mattress. Start by stripping the blankets, sheets, and mattress cover off of the mattress. Vacuum from the top and work your way down in overlapping stripes to remove dust and dead skin cells. This doesn’t provide a super deep clean, but it is good to do every so often for upkeep between deep mattress cleanings.

Deodorize

It is essential to deodorize the mattress so it doesn’t start to stink. Baking soda should be your go-to for deodorizing. Sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda over the whole mattress and rub it in gently. Let it sit for at least ten minutes before vacuuming up the baking soda. This will help you keep a fresh and clean mattress for much longer.

Remove Stains

Mattresses can be stained by almost anything that spills and soaks in. Blood and urine are common stains, but food and drinks can also cause stains if you eat in your bed. While there are products on the market to deal with these stains, you don’t necessarily need them. You can mix ¼ cup hydrogen peroxide with a tablespoon of salt and a tablespoon of dish soap to create a paste. Spread it over the stain, let it dry, and then scrape it off. For less set-in stains, you could also dab or spray them with some hydrogen peroxide.

Protect It

The quickest way to remove dirt is always going to be not to let your mattress get dirty in the first place. A quality, waterproof mattress cover will be a worthwhile investment. Mattress protectors make it easy to keep a mattress clean because you can simply remove the cover and launder it. Having two mattress covers will make it easy to always have your mattress covered even when you’re washing your sheets and the dirty cover.
