Mattress Foam 101

Learn more about what makes mattress foam unique.

The inclusion of foam in mattresses has become increasingly common in the past several years. But do you know the history of foam? How about the different ways in which your mattress can contain foam and the three different types of mattress foam? There’s a lot to learn about this magic material, and knowing more about it can help you make an informed decision when it’s time to buy a new mattress. Read on for an introduction to mattress foam.

A Short History of Foam

Foam first became part of the bedding industry in the early 1990s. At first, it was just a more comfortable option, but today modern mattress foam offers pressure-relieving and advanced support. Since mattress foam is still relatively new, it may evolve even more in the future.

The Uses of Mattress Foam

In the modern mattress industry, foam has three primary uses:

  • The comfort layer: at the top of the mattress, designed to adapt and contour to your body. This layer can often provide breathability and cooling benefits
  • The core support layer: without it, your mattress would sag and collapse! This is often a thick layer of compacted foam and serves as the backbone of the mattress.
  • The edge support layer: this layer, often compacted, sits around the outside of the bed. This keeps the walls of your bed in place so you don’t roll off when you get close to the edge.

The Different Types of Foam

There are three types of mattress foam you should know, and your preferred sleeping position will indicate which is the best fit for you:

  • Polyurethane foam: One of the most common foams, it serves as core support in all-foam beds and is often highly compacted.
  • Memory foam: Also called viscoelastic foam, this is often highly compressed. However, instead of compressing under pressure, it is designed to soften up after pressure is applied. This foam hugs you right back as you sleep.
  • Gel-infused foam: This will be one of the previously mentioned foams, infused with some form of gel to keep you cool as you sleep. The gel may be gel liquids, gel pads, or gel beads.

Why Should You Buy a Foam Mattress?

Foam mattresses can be an excellent choice for many sleepers. The foams instantly adapt to your weight without any tension to push back against your body. This creates a soothing feel that provides a pressure-relieving and body-conforming sleep. But there are a few more key benefits:

  • Mattress foam’s enhanced pressure relief eliminates the number of pressure points and alleviates associated pain.
  • Comfort foams absorb and isolate motion, eliminating disturbances when you share a bed with a partner or pets.
  • High-quality foams contour themselves to the sleeper’s form, allowing the sleeper’s spine to remain in a neutral position.

Now that you know the benefits of mattress foam, you can seek out the best foam mattress for your sleep needs.
