When to Use Full or Queen-Size Sheets

What’s the difference between full and queen-size sheets? Read on to find out.

Sizing for bedsheets isn’t always standard, which can become confusing as you try to find the best sheets for your new mattress. This can become especially tricky when searching for full-size and queen-size sheets for your full or queen mattress, as these measurements can often be quite close. If you want to make sure you find the best sheets to fit your new mattress, read on for some general information and tips about full and queen-size sheets and bedding.

Size Specifications for Queen and Full Sheets

Full-size sheets are often measured as 54 inches by 75 inches, while queen-size sheets are 60 inches by 80 inches. There may be variations in these sizes, such as California queen-size bed sheets. However, most full and queen sheet sets will be in these ranges, sometimes varying by an inch or two.

Using Full-Size Sheets on a Queen-Size Bed

If you purchase a queen-size mattress but don’t want to replace your old full-size sheets, you may wonder if you can use the full-size sheets on your new bed. The sheets won’t always fit, as even a couple of inches can make a difference. However, some full sheets will fill a queen bed. Flat sheets should work just fine, but a fitted sheet may not be quite big enough. Additionally, if you’re using jersey sheets rather than cotton or linen, the stretchy material may help the full-size sheets fit better.

If you want to use your full-size sheets, but they won’t stay in place on your queen bed, you may purchase sheet straps to keep them in place. These straps keep your fitted sheets in place by clipping to the edges of the fabric.

Which Mattress Size Works Better?

Both full-size and queen-size mattresses are recommended for one person with a pet or two adults with no pets, but there are still a few factors which shoppers should consider when making their decision between the two mattresses.

  • Price: queen-size mattresses can be a few hundred dollars more than full-size models, which also often means that queen-size sheets and bedding will also be slightly more expensive.
  • Space: both beds provide good space, but a full-size bed is often best for a single sleeper who wants to spread out. If two adults share a bed and want to spread out, they should consider a king-size bed if they have room.
  • Height: A full-size bed may be too short for anyone over six feet tall.
  • Availability: queen-size mattresses are an industry standard and can be found from every manufacturer. Full-size mattresses are slightly less standard, as are their bedding accessories, but they are still relatively easy to find.

Considering the characteristics of each bed and its bedding accessories, you can determine whether a full or queen-size mattress is best for you and then buy the appropriate bedding.
