How Dirty Is Your Sleeping Pillow?

Is it time to clean your pillow?

How dirty is your pillow? If you can’t remember the last time you washed your pillow, there’s a good chance it is very dirty and full of dust mites and bacteria. Just like your sheets, your pillows can harbor a lot of allergens, and it’s crucial to wash them regularly to keep them nice and clean.

Dust, Bacteria, And Allergens

When you think about it, it’s no surprise that our pillows are so dirty. We spend all night with our face and hair on the pillowcase, and they are exposed to our body oil, saliva, and skin dander. Most pillows show traces of fungus, bacteria, dust mites, and allergens when not washed regularly. Although your pillow is covered with a pillowcase, you should replace it every two years.

How To Wash Your Pillow

Before throwing your pillow in the washing machine, check the label for specific instructions of how to wash each one, as different materials require different methods.

Down and Fiberfill Pillows: These pillows can be thrown in the washing machine. Most pillows require warm water on the gentle cycle, then an additional cold water rinse and spin cycle. Again, your pillow may be different, so be sure to follow the care label.

Feather: Feather pillows are also machine friendly, but only when there are no slits or tears in the pillow cover. When in the drying machine, it’s best to place them in the machine with a few tennis balls (clean) to help the fluffing process.

Foam: Foam pillows can’t go in the washing machine, but can be put in the dryer on the no heat/air-only cycle for 20 minutes. You can also remove spot cleans any areas with a cloth and soapy water, then rinse with a damp cloth. If your foam pillow has options for hand washing, be sure to follow the instructions carefully as the wet foam can tear easily.
