How to Wake Up Rested Even After Little Sleep

how to wake up rested

Learn how you can wake up rested even after a short night of sleep.

While many of us know that lack of sleep can be detrimental to our waking lives, we continue to practice bad habits that wreak havoc on our biological clocks. Particularly now, when so many of us are working or learning from home, finding ways to get enough exercise, avoid screens, and avoid oversleeping can be quite difficult. However, even if you didn’t quite manage to get enough shut-eye last night, there are ways you can wake up rested and ready for your day. Read on for five tips that will make your morning rise much easier.

Don’t Hit the Snooze Button

No matter how tempting it may be, using the snooze button for those extra five or ten minutes can mess with a body’s routine and sleep cycles. Additionally, you should get out of bed once you wake up, rather than continue to lie there. Lying in bed tells your body it is still time to rest and delays your body’s wake-up process.

Embrace the Sunshine

Some cells in our eyes aren’t related to vision at all, but rather exist to take in light and help our body set its circadian clock. If you expose yourself to sunlight when you wake up, you will immediately help stimulate your mind and body. This will boost your energy and alertness, help you wake up rested and get you ready for the day ahead.

Get Moving

If getting out of bed is the first step in waking up, being active is the necessary second step. Taking a walk is a great way to get your body moving, even if you aren’t interested in strenuous exercise. Moving your body promotes healthy blood circulation, which also improves your alertness and attention. Physical activity will also give you a helpful boost of serotonin, which helps put you in a better mood and increase your chance of a better night’s sleep.

Don’t Take Electronics to Bed

Most of us spend most of our time in front of a computer, TV, or smartphone, but these screens can negatively impact our sleep. If you try to relax in bed by watching something on your phone or laptop, you are bringing harmful blue light into your bed with you. This blue light affects your melatonin levels, which is a hormone key for inducing sleep. By avoiding blue light right before bed, you can wake up rested the next morning.

Get a Great Mattress

Whether you sleep through the night or not has a lot to do with what you are sleeping on. Depending on your needs and comfort level, your mattress may be all wrong for you. If you’ve been sleeping on a bad mattress for a while, now is the time to take advantage of the many varieties of mattresses on the market.
