Sleep talking, or somniloquy, is a sleep disorder when someone talks in their sleep without realizing it. Anyone can experience sleep talking, but it is often a rare occurrence that quickly goes away. Learn more about what causes sleep talking and how it can be stopped.

What Is Sleep Talking?

Sleep talking varies from person to person, as it can involve a long monologue or may just be mumbling a string of words that do not make sense. Since sleep talkers are usually not aware of their behaviors, they may use a different voice or even a different language than they use while awake. Sleep talking may be induced by a conversation with the sleeper, but may also be spontaneous while the person is in a deep sleep.

Causes Of Sleep Talking

While anyone can be affected by the condition, it is more common in males and children. Sleep talking also has many causes, as it may be brought on by stress, depression, sleep deprivation, alcohol consumption, or a sickness such as a fever. Interestingly, sleep talking can run in the family, but external factors typically stimulate the condition. It can also happen with other sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, REM sleep behavior disorder, or nightmares.

How To Stop Sleep Talking

Since sleep talking is not a serious condition that is a rare occurrence, there is generally no treatment necessary. However, if it continues over a long period of time, it’s best to talk to a health care professional about the issue, as there may be an underly issue such as an undiagnosed sleeping disorder or anxiety.

If you only experience sleep talking every once in a while, it may be due to your lifestyle or routine. By following a regular sleep schedule and getting enough sleep every night, you can reduce the likelihood of sleep talking. Also, try to keep your stress levels down as much as possible, as well as refrain from alcohol and heavy meals before bed.
