What is Sleep Apnea?

Adjustable base bed for sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a life altering condition but it can be helped through a number of therapies including an adjustable base bed!

Sleep apnea is a common occurrence for many people. This terrifying sleep disorder comes in three different forms with different causes for each type. But what exactly is sleep apnea and how can a mattress company like All American Mattress help? Well, let’s take a look!

What is Sleep Apnea?

The word “apnea” is a Greek word meaning “without breath.” This disorder is an involuntary concession of breathing that occurs when asleep. Suffers of this disorder stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, many time multiple time a night and often for a minute or longer. They are often unaware of this disturbance because it does not fully awaken them from their sleep.

Types of Sleep Apnea

There are three types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central, and mixed. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form of the disorder. OSA is caused by partial or complete blockage of the airways during sleep. During an apnea event air is restricted from moving through the obstruction reducing blood flow to the brain. Symptoms of this apnea are snoring, frequent breaks in breathing, excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, restless sleep, and depression or irritability. Central sleep apnea (CSA) occurs when the brain temporarily fails to signal the muscles that are responsible for breathing. While OSA is thought of as a “mechanical problem,” CSA is more of a “communication problem.” CSA is much less common than OSA is often caused by medical conditions, like Parkinson’s disease and brain infections, that affect the brainstem. Some symptoms of CSA include: stopping breathing, shortness of breath leading to waking up, excessive daytime drowsiness, chronic fatigue, restless/poor sleep, headaches, difficulty concentrating, and mood changes. Mixed sleep apnea is a combination of obstructive and central sleep apnea and their symptoms. The treatment of these disorders is a CPAP machine, PAP therapy or a combination of both, which helps patients’ breath during sleep. If untreated sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, memory problems, weight gain, impotence, and headaches.

How Can All American Mattress Help?

Two of the three types of sleep apnea are costed by gravity pulling your skin down, obstructing your airways. Most people with sleep apnea have found it beneficial to sleep propped up in bed. But this isn’t easy for many people as it could cause back problems to accompany their apnea. But when you invest in an adjustable bed and base some All American Mattress, your sleep apnea could lessen, allowing both you and your partner to sleep better in bed. So why not try out an adjustable mattress today?
