Learn how listening to music before bed can improve your sleep.

Are you someone who can’t sleep in complete silence? If so, this is very common. Many people turn to white noise machines, TV softly playing the background, or relaxing music to fill the silence as they fall asleep. While not all music is beneficial for a good night’s rest, the right music can help improve your quality and quantity of sleep, as well assist in decreasing insomnia symptoms.

Insomnia

Multiple studies have found that people who suffer from insomnia or insomnia symptoms sleep better when listening to music as they fall asleep. One important result from a sleep study found that relaxing classical music is a good treatment for treating patients with insomnia. A 2014 study also found that music therapy can improve sleep in adults who suffer from other chronic sleep disorders.

Classical Music

Not all music is suitable for falling asleep, as all studies used “calming,” “relaxing” or “soothing” music for these results. The type of music may have minor differences between people, but the best music typically includes instrumental songs with little to no lyrics, often classical music, that allows you to feel more relaxed. With the help of the internet, you can find your perfect album or playlist in no time. Youtube and Spotify are filled with playlists specifically for soothing sleep music, or you can make your own playlist with songs that provide you with a sense of calmness.

Safe Ways To Listen

Listening to music with earbuds while falling asleep is not only uncomfortable, it is dangerous. Having earbuds in for too long can lead to wax build up, or necrosis of the skin- two unhealthy side effects. More importantly, sleeping with earbuds is dangerous as you may not hear sounds in the middle of the night that should wake you up, such as a fire alarm, or may even lead to choking from the headphone cords. There are a few headphones that have been designed for listening to music while sleeping, so if you prefer headphones, these are the only safe and comfortable choice. Other ways to safely listen to music include playing from a phone, tablet, radio, or TV- but don’t forget to turn on the sleep timer, so your TV isn’t on all night long.
