We’ve all had those mornings when we wake up from an incredibly vivid dream and felt like it was actually real life. On the other hand, we’ve all also woken up with no recollection of having any dreams at all. Have you ever wondered which instance is better, or means that you’ve had a better sleep?

Can’t Remember Dreams

If you regularly don’t remember your dreams, it may be a sign of poor health, according to Rubin Naiman, Ph.D. Naiman, a psychologist, and sleep and dream specialist, suggests that people who don’t remember their dreams are not getting enough REM sleep. REM, or Rapid Eye Movement sleep, makes up about 25% of your sleep cycle and happens about an hour to an hour and a half after you fall asleep. Because your sleep cycle repeats, you enter REM sleep several times during the night.

Naiman states that people who don’t get enough REM sleep are suffering from poor health since many of the health concerns attributed to sleep loss results from REM sleep deprivation. Furthermore, he even says that REM or dream loss is an unrecognized public health hazard, as it contributes to illness and depression.

Lack Of Sleep

While it’s possible that people who don’t dream as often are getting less REM sleep, it is not true for everyone. In fact, according to the National Sleep Foundation, many people experience their most vivid dreams during REM Sleep.

Either way, all sleep experts agree that on average, Americans are not getting enough “good sleep.” A 2014 National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35 percent of respondents would describe their sleep quality as “poor” or “only fair,” while 20 percent said that didn’t wake up feeling refreshed for the past seven mornings.

What It All Means

Basically, there’s no reason to panic about your health automatically if you don’t remember your dreams. Instead, pay attention to your body, mind, and mood when you wake up. If you constantly wake up feeling exhausted and have low energy throughout the day, then you can conclude that it is likely you aren’t getting enough high-quality sleep.
