When Should You Flip or Rotate Your Mattress?

rotate your mattress

Learn when you should flip or rotate your mattress for a bed refresh.

You have a great mattress, but it’s been a while since you’ve bought it. Typically, mattress owners who want to refresh their mattress will flip it. This habit was introduced into the bedding industry with the popularity of innerspring mattresses, as the spring used to wear out over time. However, with newer models of foam and hybrid materials, this habit is slowly being phased out. Instead, you may be able to rotate your mattress for a new lease on your mattress’s life. If you want to flip or rotate your mattress, read on to determine when the best time to do so may be.

When to Flip Your Mattress

Most retailers do not recommend flipping a pillow top or memory foam mattress. The practice of flipping mattresses was initially recommended for innerspring mattresses without a top comfort layer.

While flipping may prolong the life of an innerspring mattress, most mattresses today are one-sided. Today, flipping a mattress that is memory foam, hybrid foam, or pillow-top will put your mattress on the opposite side and subsequently a lot less comfortable and unusable.

When to Rotate Your Mattress

So what can you do to prolong the life of your modern mattress? Many sleepers decide to rotate their beds to keep the wear on the mattress even. When you rotate your mattress periodically, you can prolong your bed’s overall use and help keep your spine in alignment.

Rotating your mattress is generally best for pillow top and luxurious comfort mattresses as these often have additional padding or support on top. Rotating allows the mattress to even out over time and give you a new, supportive feel. The next time your mattress feels like it could use a refresh, a simple 180-degree turn could do the trick.

When to Buy a New Mattress

When flipping or rotating your mattress is not enough, it is probably time to upgrade and buy a new mattress. Flipping and rotating can increase your bed’s longevity, but eventually, you will need a replacement. If you rotate your mattress and it is still not supportive or comfortable, a new bed is likely the best solution. Fortunately, it is easier than ever to find a mattress suited to your specific needs, sleeping habits, and budget either online or in a showroom.
