The study focused on how cotton, polyester, and merino wool pajamas affected the sleep cycle of 36 adults. The findings suggest that those wearing merino flannel pajamas fell asleep in just 12 minutes, while those wearing polyester or cotton took over 20 minutes. A similar study was conducted in 2016 but instead monitored skin temperature, heart rate, and brain wave patterns of adults. The results for this study were that people who wore wool fell asleep four minutes faster and slept for seven minutes longer than others.

Body Temperature

These results make sense when we think of body temperature, as wool keeps our bodies at the most comfortable temperature for sleeping soundly. Wool regulates body temperature more than cotton or polyester, and keeps our bodies in the “thermal comfort zone.”

Wool features moisture-wicking and sweat absorbing properties, so it is no surprise that it is the best material for sleeping. After all, body temperature plays a significant role in sleep quality. As we start to drift off to sleep, our body temperature decreases slowly, which initiates the time in which we fall asleep. Wearing wool pajamas is an efficient insulator for striking a balance between core body temperature and skin temperature for a good night’s rest.

Comfort Is Key

While wool pajamas may help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer, they aren’t the right choice for everyone. Some people may find wool too itchy and uncomfortable, which does not result in restful sleep. If you choose to wear a more comfortable material, remember to keep your room at an optimal temperature- a chilly 60-65 degrees. This may seem too cold, but a cooler environment is best for falling asleep and staying asleep throughout the night!
