How to Get Kids to Fall (and Stay) Asleep

Choosing a bed for your child

While it’s a known fact that children require more sleep than adults do, getting them into bed is a nightmare for many parents.

Getting kids into bed is hard enough, but sometimes they just don’t want to go to sleep, or have trouble staying asleep. While it’s a known fact that children require more sleep than adults do, getting them into bed is a nightmare for many parents. Here are some helpful tips to make sure that your children get a healthy amount of sleep and everyone in the house is happy.

Know How Much Sleep Your Child Should Be Getting

While everyone’s sleep needs are individual, these general guidelines give you a working knowledge of approximately how much sleep your child will need according to where they are in their development. This will allow you to set rules and a schedule that will benefit their health best.

– Under 4 Weeks Old: Newborns sleep 16-17 hours a day with waking periods of 1-3 hours and follow no set schedule.

-1-4 Months Old: These children need roughly the same amount of sleep, but should begin to adhere to day/night sleep cycles.

-4 Months to 1 Year: These children sleep 14-15 hours a day. They should more often than not sleep through the night, and take naps during the day. It is important to establish healthy sleep habits for them during this stage.

-1-3 Years: 12 to 14 hours of sleep including a daily nap is common.

-3-6 Years: 11-12 hours of sleep are usual. By age 3 they should no longer require a daily nap.

-7-12 Years: Children of this age require 10-12 hours of sleep but usually only get 9-10.

-13-18 years: Teens need 8-10 hours of sleep, but almost none of them get that.

How To Help Fussy Kids Fall Asleep

It is key to make a bedtime routine and get your kids used to it. Involving hygiene, a bedtime story, and affection is a great way to get your kids to embrace bedtime. Create a comfortable ideal sleeping environment and turn off their electronics which can stimulate them and keep them awake.
