How to Maximize The Lifespan of Your Mattress

lifespan of your mattress

Learn how you can maximize the lifespan of your mattress.

When it comes to being healthy and happy, a good night’s sleep is vital. Physical, mental, and emotional health are impacted by all the things that affect your sleep, and your mattress is critical. If that wasn’t enough of a reason to make sure your mattress has as long a lifespan as possible, remember that your mattress is also a sizable investment. You don’t want to have to buy a new mattress sooner than you need to. Follow these tips to maximize the lifespan of your mattress.

Don’t Be A Creature Of Habit

If there are things you do every day on your mattress aside from sleeping, such as sitting on the edge to put shoes on or sitting in one spot for storytime, change it up day-to-day. Move to a different spot to sit so that you aren’t making a deep impression.

Rotate Your Mattress

Traditionally, it was recommended that you both rotate and flip your mattress so that it wears more evenly. However, modern mattresses tend to be made with one upside, often a memory foam topper. Typically, you should rotate your mattress every three months. However, for breaking in a new mattress, flip it every two weeks for the first four months. Using the handles on the side to rotate it is fine but if you have to move the mattress entirely off the frame, lift it from the bottom, not the handles.

Keep It Clean And Dry

Keeping your mattress clean and dry is the best way to maximize the lifespan of your mattress, and this is equal parts prevention and cure. Add a mattress cover to your bed under your waterproof and washable sheets to prevent stains and damage. To clean the mattress, remove and wash the cover and sheets and vacuum the mattress top. If there is a stain or something spilled, you can dab it with warm soapy water. However, make sure it is completely dry before making the bed.

Don’t Treat It Like A Playground

Your mattress was not made to double as a trampoline for you or any kids pretending to be little monkeys. Jumping or roughhousing on the bed could damage the springs or fibers of the mattress, so it’s best to discourage jumping on the mattress.
