Insomnia is the condition in which you are unable to fall asleep or stay asleep through the night. A surprising number of people suffer from it, but even those who live with this sleep disorder may not know some of the following facts about the condition. Read on to learn more about how this bothersome sleep disorder affects sleepers, who may be more susceptible to insomnia, and how it even impacts the world at large. 

There Are Two Types of Insomnia

The two most common types of insomnia which people are diagnosed with are acute and chronic. Acute is quite common and can be brought on by situations like stress at work or a traumatic event. While acute insomnia can last for days or weeks, chronic insomnia can last for a month or longer. The chronic type is often a secondary condition resulting from a more significant issue. 

Insomnia is More Common Than You Think

Insomnia is the most common sleeping disorder, with nearly 95% of Americans reporting that they have suffered from it at some point. About 30% of all adults complain of occasional insomnia, while about 10% report chronic cases of the disorder. 

The Disorder is More Common in Women

Perhaps due to a variety of hormones involved in the quality of sleep, women are twice as likely as men to suffer from this sleep disorder. Additionally, pregnant women are the most likely to experience any symptoms of insomnia at least a few nights a week, and 40 to 50 percent of women experience this lack of sleep during the transition into menopause. 

It Gets Worse With Age

As adults move into old age, they often struggle to get the sleep they need. A report from the National Sleep Foundation found that 39% of older adults report having a difficult time falling asleep. It can be even more difficult for men and women 65 years and older to stay asleep through the night. 

Sleep Deprivation Can Impact the Economy

Research has shown that getting less than eight hours of rest each night takes a hefty amount of money from workers and employers. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, insomnia can cost the average U.S. worker 11.3 days of productivity and can cost the nation as a whole 252.7 productive days. 

The Sleep Disorder May Be Genetic

Research has shown that your ancestors may actually play a part in your restless nights. Scientists in the Netherlands have discovered that there are at least seven genes associated with insomnia. Additionally, two separate studies in Canada have concluded that over one-third of insomnia cases have a family history of sleep disorders.
