Learn how to get your bedroom to the perfect temperature for quality sleep.

The temperature of our bedroom and mattress has a significant effect on the quality of sleep we get. During the winter, we may find ourselves shivering in bed, but having the heat on too high can cause an uncomfortable night of tossing and turning. Continue reading for a few tips on how to get your bedroom to the perfect temperature for sleep.

Programmable Thermostat

While everyone is different with their performance of how hot or cold to keep their apartment, experts say that around 65 degrees is a good average for nighttime. If you find that is too cold or too warm, anywhere within the 60-67 degrees range should be a comfortable sleep. During the winter, there is a lot of guesswork that goes with a heating system or furnace, so it’s a good idea to add a programmable thermostat to the bedroom to ensure your room is always at the right temperature.

The Right Mattress

The mattress you choose will also make a significant difference to your body temperature while you sleep. Mattresses with coils and springs at the core with a layer of foam are great for transferring heat and keeping sleepers cool. Latex mattresses are also a good option, as they don’t conduct heat and are well ventilated. When buying a new mattress, keep in mind that the softer the mattress is, the more heat it will retain. Therefore, if you prefer your mattress to keep you cool, look for a firmer mattress model.

Sheets

Your sheets will also have an effect on your temperature and sleep quality. For example, poly/cotton blend sheets will hold more heat than breathable cotton sheets. You may see bamboo sheets that are popular on the market today, as they wick moisture and feel cooler against the skin.

Dark Room

In addition to bedding, you always want your bedroom to be very dark while sleeping. Heavy curtains are a good place to start, as they are best for keeping out light and heat from the sun. They are beneficial year-round, as they block out the strong sunlight in the summer, and prevent heat loss around windows in the winter.
