Check out these tips for developing a healthy sleep schedule.

A healthy sleep schedule will have major effects on your overall health and daily life, as humans suffer when they don’t get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation is a huge problem, and many people struggle to fit eight hours of sleep into their busy schedules. However, sleep is extremely important, and we should all make an effort to get plenty of quality sleep every night!

Develop New Habits

Breaking old habits is not easy, but if you start slow and work at creating a new sleep schedule, it will become easier. Start by setting a new bedtime, and doing your best to stick to this schedule every night. Once you make a habit of getting in bed by 10 pm, or whenever you need to be in bed by to ensure you sleep for about eight hours, your body will begin to settle into the routine. For many people, the hardest part of keeping a sleep schedule is not going to bed late on the weekends. When you stay up late and sleep in on the weekends or days off, you throw off the sleep schedule you worked so hard to keep during the week.

Bedtime Routine

Once you set your sleep schedule, you should create a bedtime routine that you follow each night. Start by dimming the lights in your home about an hour or two before bed, as this signals to your body to prepare for sleep. Next, turn off blue light devices, and instead find something that relaxes you. For many people, this includes reading a book, taking a hot shower or bath, or simply preparing for the following morning. Your routine can include anything that works for you, as long as it relaxes you and allows you to be in bed on schedule.

Exercise

While it’s helpful to set a bedtime and follow a routine, some people will still have trouble falling asleep. It doesn’t do your body any good if you are in bed at a reasonable hour, but don’t fall asleep until many hours later. If you struggle with this, try to fit in at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. This can include walking around the neighborhood, going to the gym, or doing yoga in your living room. As long as it gets your heart rate up and feels as though you are working your body, it can help relieve stress and help your body fall asleep faster.
